PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Lafayette used an eight-run seventh inning to beat Penn 9-5 in the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader at Penn Park. The Quakers bounced back with a 10-4 decision in game two.
Trailing 5-1 entering the seventh inning of game one, the Leopards took advantage of the opportunities Penn (12-10) presented. Jenna Didio earned a lead-off walk. The next two batters reached on errors and then Samantha Sweigart drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Didio.
Bryn Gornick grounded out for the first out of the inning, but drove in a second run. Stephanie Thomas singled home another runner to pull Lafayette within 5-4 and prompt a Penn pitching change. A third Penn error tied the game as Allison Brown hit a ball that was misplayed at third base.
Miranda Skurla's fielder's choice scored Thomas for the go-ahead run. Didio's second time through the lineup in the inning gave Lafayette some insurance as she pulled a single through the left side of the infield. Kelly Lallis extended the lead to 8-5 before Morgan Biddle scored a final run on a wild pitch in the 9-5 final.
Didio, Lallis, Sweigart and Biddle had two hits apiece for the Leopards who had 11 hits in the first game.
Thomas was solid in relief, picking up her first collegiate victory. She did not give up a hit in her two innings of work in relief of Gornick (5 IP, 8H, 5ER, 1BB, 1K).
Game two saw the Quakers lead from start to finish, scoring 10 runs over the first three frames in a 10-4 final. Penn's Leah Allen reached base in her first three at bats of the game with two singles and a double to drive in four runs in the early going.
Lafayette pushed across two runs in the top of the third on RBI-singles from Thomas and Kristyn Marinelli. Brown (single) and Rebecca Dvorak (sac fly) drove in the Leopards' tallies in the fifth and sixth innings.
Marinelli took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs (6 earned) on 10 hits in 2.2 innings. Lindsey Cherry pitched the final 3.1 innings, scattering six hits. Alexis Borden was the winner after throwing the final 4.2 innings while giving up two runs (1 earned) on four hits with four strikeouts.
Lafayette (2-20) hosts Army in a three-game Patriot League series on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on each day is slated for noon.
