EASTON, Pa. -- Colgate claimed the first game of a Patriot League softball series, beating Lafayette 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. The game and the remaining two contests of the series were moved from Colgate's Hamilton, N.Y. campus to Easton. Colgate played as the home team on the scoreboard.
Colgate led from the outset as Mariel Schlaefer tripled home a run in the first inning. The damage could have been worse, but the Lafayette defense managed a pair of force outs at home with the bases loaded.
The Raiders (10-10, 6-1) stretched the lead to 4-0 in the second inning. Two runs scored on an error and then Marisa Dowling stole home for the final run of the inning.
The second was the final complete inning for Lafayette starter Lindsey Cherry who was removed from the game after giving up a lead-off double in the third. Bryn Gornick came on in relief of Cherry in the third and retired the next three batters. She allowed one baserunner in the fourth and fifth.
Offensively for Lafayette, the Leopards put a runner on in the fourth (Samantha Sweigart walk), fifth (Miranda Skurla single) and sixth (Kelly Lallis single) innings but could not push across a run.
Freshman Rebecca Dvorak accounted for the Leopards' only other hit on the day, a single in the first off starter Brigit Ieuter (6-2) who walked one and struck out one in the circle victory.
Schlaefer struck again for the Raiders in the sixth inning, belting a two-out, two-run home run after a run-plating double by No. 9 hitter Kate Zucker.
Lafayette (3-23, 1-6) and Colgate will finish the series on Sunday, playing a doubleheader beginning at noon at Metzgar Fields.
