LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lafayette dropped both ends of Wednesday's softball doubleheader at Bucknell, losing 8-0 and 6-1 in a series that was rescheduled from March 21-22.
Bucknell led wire-to-wire in the first game. After retiring Lafayette in order in the top of the first, Bucknell sent eight batters to the plate to score three runs in the home half. Cyndee Sanders (3-for-3) drove in the first run of the game with a single and Erin Cox doubled in two more for Bucknell (24-17, 3-5).
Trailing 5-0, Lafayette had its best offensive opportunity in the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning, Miranda Skurla belted a single and Stephanie Schreiber followed with a pinch-hit single. Samantha Sweigart, grounded out to end the inning.
The Bison ended the game in the fifth, plating three runs in the home portion. The Leopards committed two errors in the inning and singles by Chaylen Andolino (3-for-3) and a fielder's choice by Jacee Almond drove in runs.
Lindsey Cherry (2-10) allowed eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 4.1 innings while striking out four. Dana Nielsen (8-4) gave up three hits (the other to Jenna Didio in the second) while walking one and striking out one.
As Lafayette moved to the second game, the Leopards offense was able to generate a run in the first inning off Bucknell starter Amanda Fazio. Sweigart doubled the opposite way to lead off the game and later scored when classmate Rebecca Dvorak singled up the middle.
The hosts answered with two-spot in the bottom of the first inning and posted three more in the third inning. Meghan Kovac doubled in one in the first and singled in two more in the third inning as Bucknell led 5-1.
The Leopards' offense never really got on track, held hitless by Fazio over the final five innings. Fazio walked two and struck out two in the complete game. Stephanie Thomas (1-9) gave up five runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Bryn Gornick (2 IP, 2H, 1ER, 1K) finished the game in the circle for the Leopards.
Lafayette (3-27,1-10) will finish up the conference series with Bucknell on Wednesday with the opening pitch slated for 4:30 p.m.
