LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Lafayette managed to out-hit Bucknell, 7-5, but those hits were scattered and the Leopards were shut out 3-0 in the series finale on Wednesday at Becker Field.
In the second inning, the Leopards looked like they were in business following a lead-off double by Jenna Didio. Allison Brown added an infield single, but Didio was forced to hold at second. Bucknell starter Dana Nielsen struck out the next batter, Stephanie Schreiber, and then Didio was cut down at third on a 1-5 fielder's choice. Jenna Orlando struck out to end the inning.
An inning later, Lafayette count not capitalize on Samantha Sweigart's lead-off double. Kelly Lallis bunted her to third, but the potential rally was quelled by Nielsen with a groundout and a strikeout.
All of Bucknell's offense came in the bottom of the fourth. Meghan Kovac doubled off Lafayette starter Stephanie Thomas to score Cyndee Sanders. Chaylen Andolino singled in two more for the 3-0 Bucknell (25-17, 4-5) lead.
Lafayette threatened again in the sixth as Lallis and Didio each singled, but the Leopards could not score. Lafayette left seven runners on in the game, as did Bucknell.
Thomas (1-10) took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in four innings pitched. She walked three and struck out two before giving way to Lindsey Cherry (2IP, 2H, 0ER, 0BB, 1K). Nielsen (9-4) picked up her second win of the series, spreading around seven hits with a walk while fanning five.
Lafayette (3-28,1-11) welcomes Boston University for a three-game Patriot League series on Saturday and Sunday at Metzgar Fields. First pitch both days is scheduled for noon.
