BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Lafayette fell to rival Lehigh 11-10 in a back and forth battle on Friday night. The Leopards were led by Jason Sands with two goals and two assists, while Ben Falcone made 12 saves in goal.
The game which featured nine ties and six lead changes, was played within a two-goal margin from start to finish. Lafayette (4-10, 1-7) received a pair of goals from Robert Orazietti, Eric Joseph and Kevin Lewis. Brian Bock contributed one goal and one assists for the Leopards. Erik Cannon led the defense with two caused turnovers and five ground balls, and Jack McMahon won 13-of-24 faceoffs for Lafayette.
Lehigh (7-8, 3-5) was led by Dan Taylor and Reid Weber with four goals apiece. Adam Sawicki made 17 saves for the Mountain Hawks, picking up the win.
After falling behind, 1-0 early in the first quarter, the Leopards answered on an individual effort from Sands midway through the period. At the 4:05 mark of the opening frame, Bock fired a shot past the Lehigh goalie to give Lafayette a 2-1 lead.
Lehigh tied the game early in the second quarter. Lafayette countered on a man-up opportunity, as Sands found Lewis on the side of the net to push the Leopards ahead 3-2. Two minutes later, Lewis found his way around the goal and bounced a shot past the Mountain Hawk goalie to make it a two-goal advantage.
At the 7:25 mark, Lehigh trimmed the Lafayette lead to 4-3 and then tied the game at four with three and a half minutes left in the first half. The Mountain Hawks scored their third goal in a row with 47 seconds to play in the first half to take a 5-4 lead. Sands found the back of the net with less than a second on the clock to send the teams into the break knotted at five.
Lafayette tallied early in the third quarter. Joseph buried a feed from Bock to give the Leopards a 6-5 advantage. Another marker from the Mountain Hawks tied the game at six with 10 minutes left in the third period.
Joseph netted his second of the night, taking a passing from Sands and beating the Lehigh goalie at the 5:41 mark of the third quarter to give the Leopards a 7-6 lead. The Mountain Hawks found the back of the net late in the quarter, as the teams headed to the final quarter tied at 7.
Orazietti found the back of the net with 6:57 on the clock to give Lafayette an 8-7 edge. A minute later Orazietti was at it again, tallying an unassisted goal to push the Leopard lead to two.
Lehigh cut the Lafayette advantage to one with 5:18 left in the game. Another marker from the Mountain Hawks knotted the game at nine. The Leopards won the ensuing faceoff and Morgan Westby answered with his first goal of the game.Lehigh countered 12 seconds later to tie the game at 10. The Mountain Hawks found the back of the net with 1:27 to play and held on to beat the Leopards, 11-10.
The Maroon and White finish the season with a 4-10 mark overall and 1-7 record in Patriot League action.
