EASTON, Pa. -
Lafayette wrapped up the spring football season on Saturday with the team's 15th practice (long known as the Maroon-White Spring Game). No score was kept during the 2015 installment on Fisher Stadium turf in which the offense was clad in maroon and the defense in white.

"We got pretty much what we wanted out of it. I've been preaching it's `practice 15' it's not the spring game," said Frank Tavani, the Fred M. Kirby II '42 Head Football Coach. "Scrimmaging was involved in practice today just like it has been the last three Saturdays but it felt pretty good. I saw some good things both ways, offense and defense. We know we've got a lot of work to do. A lot of young players got some time in there that they haven't had to show what they can do. At this point, I am pleased with the progression but we've got a long way to go."

Despite the physical play on Saturday, new injuries were not an issue for the Leopards who, like many teams, have scaled back contact in recent spring seasons to prevent injury.

"I liked the enthusiasm out there and the fact that we didn't get anybody hurt," Tavani said. "We certainly lack depth in some areas. We know that, but our recruiting class is certainly going to come in and help that. We've got a lot of young players particularly in the o-line who are still coming together as a group. I thought they showed some signs."

During the spring, the Lafayette coaching staff has been auditioning a host of tailbacks to help fill the void left by the graduation of Lafayette's third all-time leading rusher, Ross Scheuerman. DeSean Brown, Deuce Gruden and Kyle Mayfield made their cases to be one of the backs taking hand-offs in 2015.

"Every year you are going to graduate people. Guys have to step up and get their turn. Right now the biggest question is `hey who's going to fill Ross Scheuerman's shoes?' Well nobody, no one person fills those shoes after what he was able to do over a career. But, we've got several guys with some talent and we expect to get the same production out of the position.''

"All in all, it went well. I thought we got a little something out of both sides of the ball. The bottom line is this is just another phase and we are going to the next phase of the off-season. Before you know it, Aug. 9 will come and those new freshmen will be arriving on campus."

When the team does make that early August arrival, the program's goal will be a familiar one.

"Our goal as it always is and always will be forever for all time is to win the Patriot League championship. That's our number one goal as a team every year. That's what we're focused on at this point. We don't focus on any one opponent. At this point it's just the season and the Patriot League championship."

Lafayette opens the 2015 season, hosting William and Mary on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.
