EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette used a walk-off single in game one to secure a 3-2 win and was one out away from the doubleheader sweep of Villanova before a seventh-inning grand slam halved the day with an 8-4 final.

In the opener, the Leopards grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first. Kelly Lallis reached on a one-out single. Samantha Sweigart's walk put Lallis in scoring position and Allison Brown (2-for-3, 2 RBI) came through with an RBI-single.

The lead didn't last for long. Villanova's Ali Angelbello led off the top of the second with a home run. The Wildcats added another in the third. Brittany Husk (2-for-4) reached and later scored from third on a fielder's choice, a swinging bunt by Lauren Herschberg. Stephanie Thomas tried to make the play at home from the rubber, but the throw was tardy. Villanova led 2-1.

Lafayette knotted the game at 2-2 on Brown's solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The contest remained tied entering the bottom of the seventh. Miranda Skurla drew a lead-off walk and was lifted for pinch runner Lauren Shoemaker. Morgan Biddle bunted Shoemaker to second to get her into scoring position with two outs in the inning. Jenna Didio ended the suspense, ripping a Kate Poppe offering to right field to score Shoemaker and give Lafayette a 3-2 walk-off win.

Thomas (2-11) secured her second victory of her rookie season, giving up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Poppe (10-16) scattered three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

In the nightcap, the teams exchanged runs in the first inning. Husk tripled and scored on a sac fly for Villanova. In the bottom of the inning, Lallis was aboard with two outs in the inning. Samantha Sweigart beat out an infield single to score Lallis, who was running on contact, from second.

Lafayette jumped ahead with three runs in the second inning. All of the runs came with two outs. Didio's infield single plated Miranda Skurla and the throw to home gave Jenna Orlando and Didio an extra base. Lallis took advantage, pulling a single to right to lead 4-1. Lallis' big hit followed Villanova's pitching change.

Villanova wouldn't go away, as Husk knocked in a run in the visitor third and Angelbello smashed a solo shot against the wind in the fourth to trim Lafayette's advantage to 4-3.

The Wildcats were down to their last out in the top of the seventh. Lauren Herschberg hit a ball down the third base line that looked as if it might roll foul. Skurla scooped it up to attempt to get Herschberg at first but her throw was wide, allowing the tying run to score. An infield single and a walk loaded the bases for Angelbello (2-for-3, 5RBI) whose third home run of the day gave Villanova the 8-4 final.

Lindsey Cherry (2-13) took the loss, allowing five unearned runs on three hits in relief of Kristyn Marinelli. Brette Lawrence threw the final 5.1 innings for the Wildcats, scattering three hits while walking and striking out two.

Lafayette (4-32) will have this weekend off from Patriot League action, next hosting Marist on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
