EASTON, Pa. -- Freshman
Jenna Didio used a ground ball to drive in classmate
Miranda Skurla in the bottom of the seventh as the Leopards enjoyed a holiday weekend walk-off with a 4-3 win over Army in the series finale on Sunday.
It was a back and forth game from the outset. For the third straight contest, Army managed at least one run in its first at bat. The Black Knights had three hits in the opening frame, the last by Alee Rashenskas to score their first run.
The Leopards answered in the bottom of the inning. Kelly Lallis reached on a single and Samantha Sweigart doubled her home to knot the game at 1-1. Lafayette took its first lead of the series in the second inning. Stephanie Thomas hit a lead-off double into the gap in left centerfield and the fielders collided. Two batters later, Allison Brown smashed a single the opposite way to score Thomas as Lafayette led 2-1.
The advantage was short-lived. Army (14-19, 5-4) scored two in the top of the third, using an error to the lead-off batter and two hits. Emily Gray's hot grounder off Lafayette starter Lindsey Cherry caromed to Sweigart who made the play at first, but a run scored from third. Army led 3-2.
In the sixth inning, Lafayette's first home run of the season could not have come at a better time. Bryn Gornick lifted a pitch over the leftfield fence to tie the game at 3-3.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh. Miranda Skurla just missed ending the game in dramatic fashion when she doubled off the leftfield fence to lead off the inning. With one out, Kristyn Marinelli (2-for-3) singled to left to put runners on the corners.
That prompted Army to make a pitching change, bringing in Caroline Smith, winner of both games on Saturday, for Kristen West. The next batter, Jenna Didio, hit a ground ball to second base. Skurla was running with the contact and scored the game-winning run ahead of the throw at home.
Cherry had a strong outing for the Leopards, tossing seven innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts. West threw five innings in relief for the Black Knights, but was charged with the game-winning run in the circle loss.
Lafayette (3-22, 1-5) remains at home, hosting La Salle on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
