WORCESTER, Mass. - Lafayette and Holy Cross took both games of Saturday's softball twinbill to extra innings before the Crusaders notched 5-4 and 4-3 decisions in Patriot League play.
In the series opener, Lafayette left 10 runners on base, despite banging out 10 hits.
The Leopards took an early lead with a pair of runs in the second and another in the third. Kristyn Marinelli's solo home run started things and Lafayette manufactured another run when Jenna Didio singled home Jenna Orlando who had reached on a walk. Miranda Skurla singled home another in the third for the 3-0 advantage.
Holy Cross (10-17, 8-9) answered with two runs, both unearned, on a two-run Sarah Kane single in the third.
Leading 3-2, Lafayette pushed across its fourth run in the fourth. Kelly Lallis tripled and Rebecca Dvorak singled her home for the 4-2 lead.
The margin was short-lived as Holy Cross' Mandy McCarthy legged out a triple to score two runs and knot the score at 4-4.
Lafayette had a chance to win it in the eighth. Marinelli single and moved to second on a sac bunt. Pinch hitter Bryn Gornick fouled out, but Didio kept the inning alive with a single to right field, but not deep enough to score Marinelli. Lallis popped out to end the threat.
Holy Cross finished the game in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Emily Jarvis (3-for-4) hit a solo home run off Lafayette starter Stephanie Thomas to run the final to 5-4.
Thomas (2-13) scattered six hits, allowing five runs (three earned) with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Gennifer Durham, who came on in relief in the top of the eighth, pitched two-thirds of an inning to capture the win.
The second game also went to the eighth inning when Holy Cross Taylor Moss singled to score Kane in a 4-3 final.
In the home half of the first, Jarvis was at it again, launching a two-run home run to stake Durham to the early lead.
Lafayette tied things up in the third inning. Dvorak doubled home a run and Samantha Sweigart scored Lallis on a sac fly. The inning ended when Dvorak (2-for-4) was cut down trying to tag up on the same play.
Holy Cross re-took the lead with a run in the fifth and led 3-2 entering the top of the seventh and Lafayette's final at bat. The Leopards were down to their final out when Orlando belted her first home run of the season that tied the game 3-3.
Holy Cross ended the game in the eighth as Kane (2-for-3) singled, was sacrificed to second and finally scored on Moss' second hit of the game of Lafayette starter Lindsey Cherry (2-14). Cherry allowed four runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings, striking out five. Durham (7-9) surrendered three runs on seven hits in eight complete innings for the victory.
