BOSTON - Lafayette began its 2015 Patriot League schedule with a 3-1 loss at No. 17 Boston U. on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers netted the first three goals of the contest before Amanda Magadan broke the shutout for the Leopards with her fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute.
The Maroon and White will take a 5-2 record into tomorrow's 2 p.m. matchup with No. 1 UConn. Kirby Szalkowski and Rosie Shanks registered assists on Magadan's second-half marker.
Each team managed only a single shot on goal in the opening 35 minutes. Boston's effort, however, found the back of the net, as Bea Baumberger finished off a penalty corner play to give the defending Patriot League champions a 1-0 advantage 28:30 into the contest. Kristen Taylor recorded Lafayette's shot four minutes prior, but her attempt was stopped by Terrier goalie Cammy Jensen.
Boston U. (5-2, 1-0 PL) doubled its lead on a penalty stroke 8:38 into the second half, with Hester van der Laan converting on the attempt. Amanda Cassera added a third goal shortly afterwards in the 47th minute.
The Leopards tallied their goal off a penalty corner by Shanks. She sent a pass to Szalkowski, who left the ball for Magadan to rifle a shot past Jensen. Lafayette ended up outshooting the Terriers 6-5 after the intermission, with a game-high four attempts from Magadan leading the way, but the Maroon and White were unable to reduce the deficit any further.
Another challenging matchup awaits tomorrow, with the two-time defending national champion Huskies (6-0) currently on a 20-game winning streak dating back to 2014. UConn edged out the Leopards 2-1 when the teams squared off at Rappolt Field last September.
