LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lafayette volleyball team closed out its four-game road trip with a 3-0 (16-25, 23-25, 16-25) loss to Bucknell in a Patriot League contest on Saturday night.
Katherine Stevens led the Leopards (3-11, 1-3 PL) with eight kills, while Katrina Ruggiero came one dig shy of tying her career-high with 16. Freshman setter Julia Howard recorded a team-high 13 digs in the loss to the Bison (3-13, 1-3 PL).
To open up the match, Bucknell grabbed an early 7-2 advantage before Lafayette called timeout and responded with a pair of points. However, the Bison countered with a 9-0 run to take a 16-5 lead.
The two teams traded points for the remainder of the set, with Stevens and Sonia Musso combining for four kills for the Maroon and White. Lafayette rattled off three unanswered points later in the set, but it was too late as the Bison were able to close things out with a kill by Luz Nagle.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle between the Leopards and the Bison. The Leopards lead 19-16 before the Bison cut the deficit to one following a kill by Bridgette Holland and a Leopards' error.
After a service error by the Bison and an ace by Katie Kidder, the Leopards lead was back to three. However, Bucknell went on a late 7-2 run to win the set 25-23.
The third set was tightly contested as the Leopards and Bison were knotted up at 11-11 following a kill by Jet Manzi. Immediately after the Manzi kill, Bucknell got hot and went on an 11-0 run to pull away from the Leopards.
Trailing 23-12, the Leopards earned a couple more points after Maggie Shannon and Katie Rethmeyer each tallied a kill. It was too late for Lafayette though as Bucknell only needed two more points to take the set and did after a Leopards' error and a kill by Stefanie Alpert.
Lafayette will return to action on Friday, Oct. 7 at Kirby Sports Center for a Patriot League match against Holy Cross slated for 7 p.m.
