Final Stats

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette volleyball team fell to American 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-18) in a Patriot League match on Friday night at Kirby Sports Center.

Elizabeth Walsh tallied a team-high nine kills for the Leopards (3-17, 1-9 PL) in the loss to the Eagles (19-6, 9-0 PL). Katie Rethmeyer ended her night with seven kills and a .312 attack percentage. Maria Balus recorded 21 assists while Katie Kidder led the team in digs with 10.

The Eagles jumped out to a commanding 16-7 lead over the Leopards to get things started after a 14-5 run that was sparked by a kill by Aleksandra Kazala, the team’s leading attacker. The lead continued to grow for American and within time, the Eagles took the opening set 25-12.

The second set played out differently as American struggled offensively, committing a total of 12 team errors. It was neck-and-neck and the Leopards gained a 15-14 advantage after a ball handling error by the Eagles. However, American responded with an 8-2 run and later closed the set out 25-20.

In the third set, Walsh recorded four of her nine kills, but it was a tough battle for the Leopards who after keeping the score close, fell behind 20-12 following a 10-2 run by the Eagles. Lafayette called a timeout and out of the break earned two points off of a kill by Rethmeyer and an attacking error by the Eagles.

However, it was too late as American was able to put away the set and claim the conference victory over the Leopards.

Lafayette will be back on the court tomorrow to face off against Loyola at 2 p.m. at Kirby Sports Center.
