EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette volleyball team was defeated 3-0 (9-25, 19-25, 12-25) by Army West Point on Saturday night in a Patriot League contest.

Junior Elizabeth Walsh had a team-high seven kills in the Leopards (3-12, 1-4 PL) loss to the Black Knights (12-8-4-2 PL), while freshman setter Julia Howard led the team in assists with 10.

The Black Knights controlled the tempo throughout the opening set and began with a 19-5 run that was capped off by an Amber Clay kill. Army then committed a series of attacking errors, which helped the Leopards tally four additional points. However, the Black Knights closed out the set on a 6-1 run.

About a quarter of the way through the second set, the Leopards went on a 3-0 run to cut the Army lead to one. However, the Black Knights countered with a 5-0 run to go up 14-9. The Leaopards stayed in the set and kept it close by receiving contributions from a variety of players. Lafayette tallied six kills, five coming from a different player.

The Leopards trailed 19-16, but a 5-0 run from Army helped the Black Knights pull away and eventually take the set 25-19.

Army stayed hot and carried its momentum into the third set. The Black Knights led 9-2 to get things started, but after three consecutive errors, the deficit was trimmed to four. Following two straight Army points, the Leopards cut the Army lead to just three after a short 3-0 run.

Army got back into a groove though and went on a 14-4 run to close out the set and grab the conference victory over the Leopards.

Lafayette will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 11 for a Patriot League road contest at Navy in Annpolis, Md. slated for 7 p.m.
