EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette volleyball was defeated 3-0 (16-15, 16-25, 12-25) by Colgate in a Patriot League match on Friday night at Kirby Sports Center.
Juniors Tori Smith and Elizabeth Walsh led the Leopards (4-11, 2-13 PL) in kills with six apiece, while senior Jet Manzi added five. Smith not only served as an attacking option, but also dished out a team-high 13 assists in the loss to the Raiders (17-10, 13-3 PL).
The Leopards fell behind in the first set 12-6 following a 9-1 Colgate run. Lafayette began to inch back after receiving back-to-back kills by Smith. The Leopards were able to get as close as four, before ultimately dropping the set, 25-16.
The Raiders continued to efficiently put points on the board and had a 10-5 advantage in the second set. Manzi and Walsh each tallied three kills in the set, but the Colgate attack proved to be too much as the Raiders cruised to a 24-16 set victory.
Colgate grabbed an early 8-3 advantage to begin the third set. The Leopards’ three points came on a kill and a pair of aces by Smith. The lead grew to six for the Raiders after a Lafayette attacking error, but it was trimmed to five following kills by Manzi and Kelly Flynn.
An 8-1 Colgate run halted the Leopards’ attempt at a late rally and the Raiders grabbed the set and game victory.
The Leopards will close out the 2016 season tomorrow afternoon as they play host to Navy in a Patriot League contest slated for 3 p.m.
