EASTON, Pa. -- The Lafayette women's basketball team dropped its home opener to Robert Morris 62-51 on Wednesday night at Kirby Sports Center.
The Leopards were led in scoring by junior Sammy Stipa, who poured in 13 points on four-of-seven shooting from the field. Senior Maia Hood pieced together an all-around performance dropping eight points to go along with a team-high seven boards. Junior Anna Ptasinski also put up eight points in the Leopards' (1-2) loss to the Colonials (2-1), connecting on a pair of three-pointers.
Robert Morris jumped out to a 10-4 advantage, but Stipa received the ball on the right wing and buried a shot from beyond the arc that sparked a 6-0 run to even the score up at 10 apiece.
Heading into the second quarter, the score was knotted up at 14-14. It remained a tie game until the Colonials scored on a mid-range jumper and tacked on one additional point to its lead with a made free throw. However, the Leopards put in back-to-back baskets off of shots by sophomore Alex Cantwell and freshman Alexis Santarelli to give Lafayette its first lead of the night.
The Colonials received solid guard play from A Niki Stamolamprou as she consistently created room to score by going around a bevy of screens and finding an open look at the basket. She ended her night with a game-high 22 points, while Rebeca Navarro added 13.
The Lafayette slim lead did not last long though as a 12-4 Robert Morris run, that featured a pair of Stamolamprou three-point shots, put the Colonials back on top, 29-22, leading into the half.
Robert Morris had a strong start to the second half and used a 17-4 run to get a 20-point advantage over the Leopards. Lafayette ended the run once Santarelli dribbled to her left and put in an unbalanced shot off the glass. The Santarelli score sparked a streak of seven unanswered points for the Leopards to trim the deficit to 13.
The Colonials began to pull away from the Leopards starting late in the third quarter, grabbing an 18-point lead. Robert Morris controlled the game for much of the fourth until Gumbs sank her first collegiate career three-point shot and a five-point Lafayette run ensued to cut the deficit to 11.
That was as close as the Leopards would get though as Robert Morris was able to ward off any Lafayette attack for the remainder of the contest.
The Leopards will resume play on Saturday when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to face off against Chattanooga in the first game of the Hall of Fame Women's Basketball Challenge.
