Women's Basketball Falls to Louisville

Nov. 20, 2016

Final Stats

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Lafayette women's basketball team took the court for the second time in as many days and fell 92-48 to No. 5-ranked Louisville in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Women's Basketball Challenge at the KFC Yum Center.

The Leopards (1-4) were led in scoring by Olivia Gumbs and Ashley Lutz, who each tallied nine points on the afternoon. Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby and Sammy Stipa both added eight points in the loss to Louisville (4-0).

The Cardinals applied heavy pressure early in the contest and used that to their advantage, jumping out to a 9-0 run to begin the game. Louisville extended its lead to 12 after a Mariya Moore three-point make, her second of the game.

Lafayette ended the Cardinals' run once Ottewill-Soulsby received the ball in the low post and made an up-and-under for the Leopards' first score of the game. The Cardinals grabbed a 20-2 advantage from that point on before Lutz and Stipa each knocked down a midrange jumper.

The Leopards would add one more score in the quarter off a Nia Holland foul shot.

Louisville led 26-7 heading into the second quarter and carried the momentum, going on an 18-5 run that spanned over the first seven minutes.

Lafayette pieced together a short 5-0 run that featured a made jumper by Ottewill-Soulsby and Nia Holland's first career make from beyond the arc.

By the half, the Cardinals led 48-17 and shot close to 50 percent from the field. Louisville extended its lead out of the break with another lengthy run. This time, the Cardinals outscored the Leopards 22-5 over a nine-minute span in the third quarter to go ahead 70-24.

Entering the final quarter of play, the Leopards scored two early baskets and proceeded to play solid lockdown defense. For over four minutes, Lafayette only allowed the Cardinals to put two points on the board as part of a 10-2 run. The Louisville lead proved to be insurmountable though as the Cardinals went on to close out the game with the victory.

The Cardinals utilized their length and size to corral 28 offensive rebounds and turn them into points as they scored 26 second chance points. Louisville did most of its damage down low, putting up 54 of its 92 points inside the painted area.

The Leopards will be back on the court tomorrow evening to take on Bowling Green in the Hall of Fame Women's Challenge slated for 5 p.m. at the KFC Yum Center.
