LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Lafayette women's basketball team was defeated 69-52 to Bowling Green on the third day of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Women's Basketball Challenge at the KFC Yum Center.
Bowling Green (1-4) jumped ahead early with 10 unanswered points, but the Leopards (1-5) got on the board once Sarah Agnello buried a contested three from the left corner with the shot clock winding down.
The Falcons got multiple good looks at the basket from deep early and capitalized, hitting three of their first five, all coming off shots from Sydney Lambert. Lambert would add one more in the contest and finish with a game-high 16 points.
It was 10-3 in favor of the Falcons as they picked up a full court pressure and were able to cause Lafayette to turn the ball over. A Bowling Green 18-5 run helped the Falcons capture a lengthy lead heading into the second quarter.
With the Falcons making shots from beyond the arc, the Leopards put an emphasis on chasing them off the 3-point line and successfully did. However, Bowling Green changed up its plan and began to attack the basket. The Falcons finished the first quarter shooting 10-of-15 from the field.
Bowling Green continued to extend its lead, but for the closing six minutes of the first half, the Leopards' defense slowed down the opposition's attack, holding the Falcons to just five points.
At the half, Bowling Green led 39-19 and opened up the third quarter with a 10-3 run. Lafayette countered by finding Angela Ribarich down low for a pair of post shots in the paint.
Near the end of the third and heading into the fourth, the Leopards continued to look for Ribarich in the painted area and she delivered, sinking two more shots. An Agnello three ensued and the Leopards were on a 7-0 run.
From that point forward, Lafayette employed a full court man-to-man press that proved to be a lot to handle for the Falcons. Bowling Green turned the ball over several times and struggled to get into its offensive sets. Meanwhile, the Leopards attacked the paint hard by turning to Ribarich and she capped off the night with a season-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
The night ended with an 8-1 run for the Falcons and Bowling Green grabbed the win.
The Falcons held the edge in rebounds 51-31, but Olivia Gumbs corralled a career-high 12 rebounds for the Leopards.
The Leopards will get a few days off for Thanksgiving break before heading back on the road to Springfield, Mass. to resume the Hall of Fame Women's Challenge at the MassMutual Center for a 3:30 p.m. game against Hampton slated for Nov. 27.
