Volleyball Falls to Army in Road Conference Tilt

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team dropped a road Patriot League match to Army 3-0 (18-25, 11-25, 13-25) on Friday night.

Seniors Jet Manzi and Tori Smith each tallied a team-high seven kills for the Leopards (4-19, 2011 PL) and recorded at least four digs. Junior Katie Kidder recorded a game-high 17 digs in the loss to Army (17-10, 9-4 PL).

The Black Knights commanded the first set and grabbed an 18-6 lead. The Leopards slowly began to inch back into the set though after a short 4-0 run that featured an ace by Kidder. It was 22-12 in favor of Army when the Leopards went on a 3-0 run, but the Black Knights warded off the Lafayette attack and took the opening set, 25-18.

The Leopards got a pair of kills from Smith and Manzi to begin the second set. Trailing 4-3, the Black Knights went on a 12-1 run. Lafayette had a 3-0 run that featured an ace by freshman Julia Howard, but the Black Knights took control the rest of the way and outscored the Leopards, 10-3 to grab the victory.

The third set featured two lengthy runs for the Black Knights. The first was a 12-2 run that was sparked by a Rachel Gearon kill and capped off by a Lafayette attacking error. The second run came late in the set when the Black knights outscored the Leopards 7-2 to seal the set and conference victory.

The Leopards return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Holy Cross in a road Patriot League contest slated for 4 p.m.
