EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's basketball team's closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 81-39 loss to Drexel on Wednesday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center.
Freshman Olivia Gumbs flirted with a double-double in the Leopards' (1-11) loss to the Dragons (7-2) as she put up seven points on 3-of-6 shooting and tied her career-high in rebounds with 12. Senior Maia Hood led all Lafayette scorers with 11, the third time this season that she eclipsed the double-digit scoring mark, while junior Anna Ptasinski added seven.
It was a 6-6 game when Drexel began to apply full-court pressure and it caused problems on the Lafayette end as the Leopards committed five turnovers in the opening six minutes of play. The Dragons got into a rhythm offensively while the Leopards struggled to score and a 17-0 run helped Drexel jump ahead 23-6. Jessica Pellechio led the charge with eight points in the early going and she finished the afternoon with a game-high 14.
The scoreless drought was snapped once Hood was fouled trying to score from under the basket and she made one of two shots from the charity stripe.
The Leopards and Dragons went back and forth for the first half of the second quarter as Drexel had an answer for every Lafayette basket. Despite the Leopards more than doubling their first-quarter performance and shooting around 46 percent from the field, it was not enough as the Dragons extended their lead to 23, 45-22, by connecting on over 50 percent of their shot attempts.
The lead continued to grow for the Dragons as they continued to knock down shots, going 7-of-10 from the floor and outscoring the Leopards 21-10 in the third quarter to go ahead 66-32.
The Lafayette defense held the Dragons to just three makes in the final quarter of play, but the Drexel lead was insurmountable at that point and the game came to a close with the Dragons on top 81-39.
The Leopards will have eight days off before returning to action as they open up Patriot League play in Hamilton, N.Y. to face off against Colgate on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
