QUEENS, N.Y. - In the first game of a three-game road set, the Lafayette women's basketball team was defeated 64-46 by St. John's on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm (4-3) shot just under 40 percent from the field against the Leopards (1-8) and had success capitalizing on scoring opportunities down low as St. John's put in 26 from inside the paint. Meanwhile, Lafayette struggled from the field, failing to eclipse the double-digit mark in each of the first two quarters and ultimately shooting under 30 percent for the game as a team.
The Lafayette shooting woes allowed the Red Storm to capture an early lead and St. John's ultimately ran away with the game.
Olivia Gumbs was a bright spot for the Leopards, scoring a career-high 14 points and reeling in six boards. The freshman muscled her way to the basket on numerous occasions and got the free throw line, where she knocked down six foul shots. She also used her length to disrupt the passing lanes, picking up a pair of steals.
Lafayette got off to a rocky start, making just one of its first 10 from the field, while the Red Storm poured in 11 points to grab an eight-point advantage. The Leopards trimmed the deficit to two, 11-9, once Maia Hood ripped the ball away from a St. John's player, got it back, and scored on a fast-break opportunity.
St. John's began the second quarter on a 7-2 run to go ahead by eight and the defensive intensity picked up for the Red Storm, allowing just four Lafayette points over an eight-minute span. During that time, St. John's extended its lead to 13, 26-13, with seven unanswered points. The Red Storm would maintain that 13-point advantage heading into the half.
The Leopards came out firing in the third quarter, connecting on their first three attempts from beyond the arc. However, St. John's held on to its large lead by continuously attacking the basket. All but two of the Red Storm's first 11 points of the quarter came off of layups and free throws before Crystal Simmons and Andrayah Adams hit back-to-back 3-pointers.
An Alisha Kebbe jumper in the closing seconds of the third quarter extended the Red Storm's lead to 20. With both teams trading baskets for the entirety of the final quarter of play, it was difficult for the Leopards to make a dent into the deficit and ultimately the game ended with St. John's on top 64-46.
The Leopards will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when they square off against Princeton in a non-conference road tilt slated for 6 p.m.
