ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Lafayette had no answer for a hot-shooting Navy team Saturday, falling 64-48 to the Mids at Alumni Hall.
Navy (13-11, 7-6 PL) entered tonight eighth in the conference with a 35.2 field goal percentage, but the home team was 46.7 percent through the first three quarters tonight, including a 10-for-21 performance from long distance. Maia Hood led the Leopards with 13 points, converting 13-of-14 attempts from the free throw line.
Jumpers from Sammy Stipa and Jamie O'Hare gave Lafayette an early 4-0 lead. Navy, though, followed with a 12-0 run, and the Leopards would hit only one more field goal for the remainder of the first quarter.
The Mids led 21-7 to start the second, and they increased that lead to as many as 19 points before settling for a 35-20 advantage heading into the intermission. Navy had a big edge from beyond the arc, hitting 8-of-16 attempts from 3-point range compared to a 1-for-10 performance for Lafayette.
The Leopards were unable to cut into the deficit after halftime, trailing by up to 26 points in the third quarter. Ten turnovers from the Mids in the fourth quarter helped the Maroon and White win that frame by a 16-6 margin.
Sarita Condie scored 13 points, all in the first half, to pace the Navy offense. Taylor Dunham chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Hood's performance at the line was the best for the Maroon and White since Lauren Jackson '11 went 15-for-15 in a win over Penn on Dec. 2, 2009. No Lafayette player had more makes or attempts in a game since that contest.
Ashley Lutz grabbed a team-high seven boards, while Stipa and Alex Cantwell had four steals apiece.
The Leopards (5-18, 3-10 PL) are back at Kirby Sports Center for the next matchup, taking on American at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
