Brooke Wensel Garners P.L. Rookie of Week Honors

Feb. 22, 2016

EASTON, Pa. -- Lafayette freshman shortstop Brooke Wensel has been named the Patriot League Softball Rookie of the Week. Wensel hit .294 with five RBIs in a tournament hosted by UNC-Wilmington.

Wensel's double in the season opener vs. Rhode Island gave the Leopards the lead for good in an eventual 11-8 decision. In the fourth game of the five-game tournament, Wensel contributed two RBIs in the three-run fifth inning as Lafayette stretched its lead to 6-3 in a 10-3 final over Delaware State.

Wensel had a hit in four of the Leopards' five games, including two in the series finale vs. Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon. She is the first Lafayette softball player to earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors since 2008 when Stacey Kushner won the award twice and Kerry Griffin secured the honor once.

"What won't show up in the stat lines for Brooke are her clutch hits and defensive plays," said Lafayette head coach Jexx Varner. "Brooke also made three spectacular plays at short this weekend that drew a lot of attention from opposing coaches. It saved both runs and hits for our pitchers. She had a great opening weekend and this is only the beginning for her."

Lafayette returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, playing four games in the UMBC First Pitch Classic where it will face UMBC and Maryland-Eastern Shore.
