Pards Claim Bucknell Series Via a 6-2 Win on Sunday

Four different players drive in runs on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day; Alvarez-Backus tosses complete game

EASTON, Pa. –  The Maroon and White captured their first Patriot League series victory of the season, beating Bucknell 6-2 on Sunday in the weekend finale at Metzgar Fields.

Four players drove in runs for the Leopard offense with senior Maggie Klug leading the way with a two-run double. Sophomore Sophia Alvarez-Backus turned in a strong outing in the circle, limiting Bucknell to two runs on four hits for her second victory of the season. Prior to the game, members of the Lafayette faculty and staff threw out a first pitch on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day.

The Leopards got off to a hot start with four runs in the first inning. Freshman Ava Butler's sac fly accounted for the first run. Junior Katie Harrington followed with an RBI-single to make it 2-0. The Leopards' doubled their advantage with two outs in the inning. Klug smacked a ball deep to left field which the Bucknell fielder lost it in the sun and allowed allowing Lafayette to stretch the lead to 4-0.

In the second inning, Olivia Catalina manufactured a run. She drew a lead-off walk and a ground ball moved her to second before. The senior swiped third base and later scored on a wild pitch as Lafayette led 5-0.

Bucknell scored its only runs of the afternoon in the third inning. Barbara Jo Coppola delivered a two-run home run that trimmed Lafayette's advantage to 5-2.

Lafayette tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning. Senior Dani Rosner came through with a double to plate Caroline Hall (single) to run the final to 6-2.

Bucknell starter Avery Powers made it just one inning in the loss. She surrendered four runs on three hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout. Alvarez-Backus retired the Bucknell lineup in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and allowed just one hit in the seventh as she collected the win.
