HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Lafayette concluded the road portion of its regular season schedule with a 70-55 defeat to Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
The loss prevented the Leopards from clinching a home game for the first round of the Patriot League Tournament next Saturday. They remain, however, in seventh place in the conference standings, and can still guarantee a home game by either beating Bucknell on Wednesday or having Colgate lose at Lehigh that same evening.
The Raiders (5-22, 3-14 PL) started 1-for-14 from the field, but made 47.1 of their attempts the rest of the way to end a nine-game losing streak and finish off a season sweep of the Leopards (6-21, 4-13 PL).
Angela Ribarich had her second-straight strong performance off the bench, totaling 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Jamie O'Hare added 15 points, moving into 11th on the all-time Lafayette scoring list, while Maia Hood (11 points, nine rebounds) was one board shy of her fourth double-double of the season.
Colgate's Josie Stockill had 27 points and 13 blocks when the two teams met on Dec. 22, and she was similarly effective on her Senior Day this afternoon. Stockill led the home side with 18 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks. Katie Curtis chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds, and Paige Kriftcher contributed 10 points and four assists.
The Leopards jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first quarter during Colgate's early shooting drought from the floor, and O'Hare's second 3-pointer of the frame made it 14-9 with 1:53 on the clock.
Lafayette continued to lead by five at 18-13 with 8:21 remaining in the half. The Raiders took their first lead of the second quarter when a pair of Chelsea Koren free throws made it 23-21 with 5:25 left, and they used an 8-0 run late in the frame to open up a bit of a cushion. The Leopards would ultimately trail 36-28 at the break.
Colgate increased its advantage to 45-30 on a 9-2 run in the opening 2:56 of the third quarter. Both teams then went on an extended scoring drought, with neither squad scoring for 4:33 until Ribarich went 1-for-2 from the free throw line.
The Raiders led 49-36 heading into the fourth quarter and never allowed Lafayette to get back within single digits down the stretch.
That Bucknell game will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside Kirby Sports Center. It will also be Senior Day for both O'Hare and Annette Snow, with each honored prior to the start of the contest.
Notes:
Lafayette had a double-digit disadvantage on the boards for a third-consecutive game, as the Raiders had a 54-37 rebounding edge. Twenty-three of those Colgate rebounds came on the offensive side of the ball.
O'Hare, who also had three assists and three steals today, passed Theresa O'Connell '90 (mother of freshman Alex Cantwell) for 11th on the all-time scoring list with her 15-point effort today. She now has 1,187 points in her career on College Hill
Ribarich again came just short of her career-high of 17 points set Jan. 30 against Loyola. She was 8-for-12 from the free throw line.
