PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Buoyed by a strong pitching performance from Lindsey Cherry, Lafayette scored three runs in the seventh to grab a 3-0 win over UMBC in the second round of the UMBC First Pitch Classic late Saturday afternoon.
Entering the seventh, Lafayette and UMBC (2-9) were deadlocked in a scoreless tie. Samantha Sweigart (2-for-3) led off the top of the inning with a single. Maddie Wensel did her job and bunted Sweigart to second. Brooke Wensel's single moved Sweigart 60 feet closer to the go-ahead run. The first run of the game came plateward on Miranda Skurla's double.
The inning continued as a wild pitch scored Wensel and Rebecca Dvorak's single to center brought home another insurance run as the Leopards led 3-0.
As the game moved to the bottom of the seventh, Cherry gave up a lead-off single, but struck out two of the next three batters to end the game. Cherry (1-0) scattered just three hits (all to Bridget O'Malley) and struck out six on the afternoon. Nicole Casagrand (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Lafayette plays two more games on Sunday, facing UMES at 10:30 a.m. and UMBC at 12:45 p.m.
