PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Lafayette's offense never got going in the finale of the UMBC First Pitch Classic. UMBC pounded out 13 hits on the way to an 11-0 final in five innings.
The Leopards were held to three hits, with freshman shortstop Brooke Wensel accounting for two. She hit .455 for the four-game tournament, going 5-for-11 with three runs scored and two RBI, and leads the team with a .357 overall batting average.
Lafayette had its best scoring chance in the second inning, as Brooke Wensel led off with a single and Maddie Wensel was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. UMBC starter Jessica Holte then buckled down, striking out Miranda Skurla, while also retiring Rebecca Dvorak (fly out) and Kristyn Marinelli (ground out).
Leading 2-0, UMBC broke open the game with three runs in the third inning. Bridget O'Malley doubled in one and Carly Lesko's two-run homer off Stephanie Thomas stretched the Retrievers' margin to 5-0.
The hosts (3-9) put away the game with six runs on six hits in the fourth inning. In the inning, Lesko knocked in two more with a single up the middle as did Kaelin Jackson for the 11-0 final.
Holte (1-3) fanned four in her first victory of the season, scattering three hits over five innings. Thomas (1-4) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Lindsey Cherry finished the game, allowing six earned on eight hits.
It's not the last Lafayette (4-5) will see of UMBC this season, as the Leopards next play at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational on March 11-13 in which they will face the Retrievers, Morgan State and Mount St. Mary's once and Coppin State twice.
