Feb. 29, 2016 EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette freshman shortstop Brooke Wensel made it two straight weeks as the Patriot Softball Rookie of the Week. Wensel hit for a .455 average with a pair of extra-base hits over four games.
In the first of four games at the UMBC First Pitch Classic, Wensel knocked in a run as part of a two-run second inning that gave Lafayette the early 2-0 lead in a 4-3 win vs. UMES. Against UMES on Sunday, Wensel connected for the game-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. The freshman did not commit an error in 15 chances at shortstop as the Leopards went 2-2 in the tournament.
For the season, Wensel leads the Leopards (4-5) with a .357 average, collecting seven RBIs and 10 hits overall with three doubles.
Lafayette (4-5) next plays on March 11-13 at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational, facing UMBC, Morgan State and Mount St. Mary's once and Coppin State twice.
