PHILADELPHIA, Pa.. -- A seventh-inning rally fell a run short in a 2-1 Leopard loss at Penn on Wednesday evening. Allison Brown homered in the inning and the Leopards put the tying run on third before Penn quelled the rally.

Penn (7-5) scored both of its runs in the first inning and held on for its second win of the day. Leah Allen (2-for-3), who had a grand slam in game one, tripled in both runs for the Quakers.

The Leopards threatened in the fifth inning when Penn replaced starter Mason Spichiger with Lauren Li who hit the first batter (Miranda Skurla) she faced. Stephanie Thomas sacrificed Skurla to second. Bryn Gornick followed with a single through the left side that put Skurla at third. The next batter, Jenna Didio, grounded out to third, but Skurla was forced to stay put on the play. Li ended the inning by getting Jenna Orlando to foul out.

Lafayette (4-7) broke through with a run in the seventh. The first batter of the inning, Allison Brown, connected for a solo shot to left center to cut the deficit to 2-1. With one out in the inning, Thomas singled to place the tying run aboard. Morgan Biddle bunted Thomas into scoring position, but the Leopards were down to their last out.

Didio kept the inning going with a single to left that advanced Thomas to third. Penn made the call to the bullpen, bringing Spichiger back into the game to close it out. She retired pinch hitter Kristyn Marinelli on a foul out.

Spichiger (2-1) collected the victory, throwing 4.1 innings while allowing just one hit. Lindsey Cherry (1-1) allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two earned runs in the loss.

Lafayette will plays its home-opening doubleheader on Saturday, hosting Wagner at 1 p.m.
