PHILADELPHIA, Pa.. -- Lafayette played its first softball in more than two weeks and the time off was not kind to the Leopards' offense which was held to three hits in a 4-0 loss at Penn on Wednesday afternoon.
The Quakers (6-5) scored all four of their runs in the third inning on a Leah Allen grand slam. A single, a walk and another single loaded the bases to start the inning and set the stage for the Penn cleanup hitter's first home run of the season.
Four of the hits Lafayette starter Stephanie Thomas (1-5) gave up came in the third frame, as the sophomore stuck out five and walked four in her fifth start of the season. For Penn, Alexis Sargent (5-1) struck out nine while scattering three hits.
Two of the Leopards' three hits came off the bat of Samantha Sweigart who singled in the first and doubled to lead off the fourth. In the fourth, Sargeant struck out the next two batters after Sweigart's double, and a popout ended the inning.
Weather permitting, Lafayette (4-6) will play the second game of the doubleheader at Penn Park. Thunderstorms have twice delayed the game.
