WASHINGTON, D.C. -- George Washington claimed both games of Wednesday's softball doubleheader, winning the opener 5-0 and the second game 3-2 in eight innings.
In the night cap, Lafayette trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Brooke Wensel reached on a three-base error when the centerfielder tripped and couldn't make a play on the ball. The Leopards took advantage of the miscue as Rebecca Dvorak's sac fly knotted the score at 2-2.
George Washington (11-12) threatened to end the game in the home half, loading the bases with one out. The Lafayette defense came up with a big play. Kristyn Marinelli got Rochelle Draper to fly out to center and Ashley Schnarrs was thrown out on the play while retreating to third to end the threat.
In the eighth, Jenna Didio led off with her second hit of the afternoon, and was 60 feet closer after a Morgan Biddle sac bunt. The bases were loaded with one out following Allison Brown's single, but GW starter Jayme Cone struck out Maddie Wensel and got Sam Sweigart to fly out to center to end the inning.
The hosts put away the game in the eighth. A pair of infield singles put two runners on with no outs. The Leopards cut down the lead runner on a fielder's choice for the first out. The next batter flew out to center, and the runners tagged up to second and third. Marinelli walked the next batter to load the bases before Morgan Rinehart's single to rightfield ended the game.
Marinelli (2-3) threw 7.2 innings, giving up three runs on 11 hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Cone (1-3), who struck out four, allowed two runs on five hits in the win.
In the first game of the doubleheader, George Washington scored four runs in the third inning to capture a 5-0 victory.
GW starter Sarah Costlow held the Leopards to just three hits over five innings and did not walk a batter. Her relief, Ashley Pilcher, threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit.
With a 1-0 lead, the Colonials' Paige Kovalsky doubled in the first two runs in the four-run third frame. GW added insurance runs on an error and an RBI-single from Morgan Matetic.
Miranda Skurla had one of the two extra-base hits in the game with a one-out double in the fifth. Brooke Wensel and Marinelli each belted singles.
In the circle, Lindsey Cherry (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts.
Lafayette (6-11) concludes its six-game spring break swing on Thursday at St. Francis (Pa.). First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
