Sweigart, Wensel Secure PL Softball Honors

April 12, 2016

EASTON, Pa. - Sophomore Samantha Sweigart and freshman Brooke Wensel have been named the Patriot League Softball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

It's the first career weekly honor for Sweigart who plays second base. Currently on a seven-game hitting streak, Sweigart hit for a .538 average during the reporting week. She hit a home run on the first pitch of the first game of Sunday's doubleheader and was hit by a pitch the next three at bats, going on to score three runs in a 9-4 victory. In the series finale, she was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in a 10-9 victory as Lafayette claimed its first Patriot League series since 2012 by taking two of three from Holy Cross.

Sweigart's defense also stood out. The shortstop did not commit an error in 22 chances and holds a .978 season fielding percentage with three errors in 136 chances.

Wensel collects her third Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor this season after also winning the award on Feb. 22 and 29. Wensel hit for a .471 clip in a 3-2 week that included a weekday doubleheader split with La Salle. Wensel was 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBIs in the 9-4 win over Holy Cross on Sunday.

Wensel is on a six-game hitting streak and shares the team lead in batting average (.333) with Sweigart, both of whom have started every game. The duo's defense up the middle has been key to Lafayette's .965 fielding percentage, the best single-season effort in program history.

Lafayette next plays on Thursday at Villanova at 3 p.m. before hosting Rider on Sunday at noon.
