EASTON, Pa. -- Bucknell scored 10 runs in the first three innings in a 12-2 win over Lafayette softball on an extremely windy day at Metzgar Fields. The Bison managed 15 hits against three Leopard pitchers in the series finale.
Bucknell (19-11, 5-1) out a three-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Meghan Kovac (3-for-4) caught the jetstream and the ball flew over the wall in centerfield. The Bison added three more hits in the inning, the final one a two-run double down the rightfield line by Mariah Midyette.
Samantha Sweigart led off the bottom of the first for the Leopards and promptly smacked Amanda Fazio's first offering over the fence in right for her first home run of the season. Lafayette trailed 3-1. Sweigart, who batted in the lead-off spot, finished the day 2-for-2 and upped her season average to .300.
The visitors produced three more runs in the second with Carolyn Wan (3-for-4, 4 RBI) going the opposite way down the third base line to score two runs. The Leopards nearly closed out the inning on an athletic play by Brooke Wensel who gobbled up a grounder at shortstop, touched second and fired to first. The throw pulled Kristyn Marinelli off the bag and a run scored from third for the 6-1 lead.
Four more runs put the Bison comfortably ahead. Midyette led off the inning with a solo home runs and Wan singled in two more runs as the Bison had five hits in the frame to lead 10-1.
In the fourth inning, Lafayette scored its final run. Brooke Wensel led off with a double and Allison Brown's single put runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later, Maddie Wensel, grounded out to score Brooke Wensel from third.
Thomas (2-9) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in two innings. Stacy Gordon and Marinelli threw the final three innings for the Leopards. Fazio (9-6) struck out two, giving up two runs on five hits over four innings.
The Leopards (7-20, 0-6) travel to La Salle on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader before returning home to host Holy Cross in a three-game Patriot League series on Saturday and Sunday.
