Wensel Garners All-Patriot League Honors

May 10, 2016

EASTON, Pa. -- Freshman shortstop Brooke Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) has earned a place on the All-Patriot League Softball Second Team after a rookie year in which she led the team in hitting and started every game.

Wensel is one of just two first-year players honored among the 12 first-team and 12 second-team selections announced Tuesday morning following a vote of the Patriot League coaches.

Playing shortstop, Wensel proved herself an adept fielder with a strong arm. She began the season at the crucial position up the middle and did not relinquish control of the starting spot during the team's 45 games, becoming one of three players to start every game for the Leopards.

Wensel hit for a .324 average with eight doubles, one home run and 17 runs batted in. She managed a .777 OPS with an on-base percentage of .373 and a slugging percentage of .404, trailing only sophomore Samantha Sweigart (.862) in that category.

The Bechtelsville, Pa., native was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week three times during her first season on College Hill (2/22, 2/29 and 4/12) and likely cemented her All-Patriot League selection with strong three-game series at Army (5-7, 5-8) when she hit for a .500 average and drove in the winning run in the series finale. She ended the regular season ranked 13th in the Patriot League in overall batting average and 13th in conference-games only.

Wensel was part of a youthful squad in 2016, one of 28 teams in the nation to feature 10 or more freshmen and sophomores on its roster. She is the first All-Patriot League selection for the program since Brittany Paul in 2013.
