WEST POINT, N.Y.. -- Lafayette softball closed its 2016 campaign with a 1-0 victory at Army on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Stephanie Thomas (3-9) threw her first shutout of the season, holding the Black Knights (37-18, 3-5) to four hits while walking just one of the 23 batters she faces.
The Leopards scored the only run of the game in the third inning. Samantha Sweigart's one-out single set the table and she later benefited from a Kristen West (3 IP, 3H, 1 ER), wild offering to move to second. Jenna Orlando's pop out was the second out of the inning. Freshman Brooke Wensel came through with a run-scoring single up the middle for the 1-0 lead.
The Lafayette defense aided Thomas' cause, turning double plays in the fourth and seventh innings to maintain the tentative lead.
Sweigart had four of the team's six hits, all of which were singles. The Leopards left seven runners on base while Army stranded only two, never having a runner reach third base.
Lafayette finishes the season 13-30 overall and 3-13 in Patriot League play.
