EASTON, Pa. – This past Saturday, the Lafayette baseball team did not participate in a typical offseason workout at Metzger Fields Athletic Complex.
Instead of taking batting practice or doing fielding drills, the team’s physical and mental toughness was tested in a Navy Seal Training program that was hosted by Stonewall Solutions.
Stonewall Solutions is a company comprised of two former collegiate student-athletes and ex-Navy Seals, Jason Kuhn and Paul Vespie. Kuhn was a four-year pitcher on the Middle Tennessee State baseball team as well as a Navy Seal for eight years, while Vespie was also a Navy Seal and a basketball player at Tennessee Temple University.
Kuhn and Vespie visit schools at all levels, all across the country, to help with team building, team culture and mental skills. They teach different leadership skills and show athletes how to be confident in high pressure situations.
The day started off with a classroom presentation for the Lafayette baseball players in the morning where they were showed videos of what it takes to be a Navy Seal. The student-athletes learned about a variety of important skills such as teamwork, selflessness, self-motivation, brotherhood and discipline and how to apply each of them not only on the field, but also in life
After, the players headed out to the field for a variety of different drills and workouts which included some similar exercises that the Navy Seals take part in. The players were separated into different groups and took part in various drills and exercises that tested their leadership qualities.
“They learned what it takes and means to be a leader,” Lafayette head baseball coach Joe Kinney said. “It is all about supporting the guys next to you.”
All throughout the day, Kuhn and Vespie spoke about their experiences both as Navy Seals and student-athletes. They showed the importance of teamwork, being proactive and being held accountable.
“It was a tremendous experience for my team,” Kinney said. “Everyone walked away with something different. This is something that I am going to refer to many times throughout the season when things get tough.”
