ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the first time this season, the Leopards had two players record a double-double in a single game, but it was not enough to combat Navy's hot shooting, as the Midshipmen claimed a 76-41 Patriot League win on Saturday night at Alumni Hall.
Freshman Olivia Gumbs led the Leopards (1-17, 0-6 PL) with 12 points and tied her career-high in rebounds with 12. Senior Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby had her first career double-double after scoring 11 points and reeling in 11 boards.
Lafayette and Navy (12-5, 5-1 PL) each featured different styles of play as the Leopards used their size and attacked the paint against the smaller Navy team, while the Midshipmen lived from beyond the arc.
Freshman Olivia Gumbs was the primary scorer for Lafayette early, scoring eight points and reeling in six boards in the opening quarter. Five of her six rebounds came on the offensive end, allowing the Leopards to get a bevy of second-chance looks at the basket. Lafayette took eight more shots than Navy, but was unsuccessful in turning all of those opportunities into points.
On the other end, Navy could not miss and was electric from beyond the arc, scoring 15 of its 19 first quarter points from long range while missing just one shot from deep to take a six-point lead, 19-13, heading into the second quarter.
While the Midshipmen continued to knock down shots, the Leopards struggled out of the gate in the second quarter and failed to score for over a four-minute span. At that point, Navy led by 10, 23-13, but a Sammy Stipa three ended the drought and cut the deficit to single digits.
Navy extended its lead though by using a 10-2 run that was sparked by a pair of Hannah Fenske 3-pointers to close out the half and give the Midshipmen a 37-21 advantage.
The two teams traded baskets to begin the second half, but the Leopards suffered a huge loss midway through the third as Gumbs picked up her fourth foul and was forced to the bench for the remainder of the quarter.
Navy was held without a three-point make in the third until the closing seconds of the quarter when Fenske knocked down her third of the game. Despite not making a three for nearly the entire third quarter, the Midshipmen still managed to keep their large lead and entered the final quarter of play up by 19, 49-30.
The fourth quarter was the best of the night for the Midshipmen, who put up 27 points on 70-percent shooting from the field.
The 3-pointers began to fall again and the Navy lead grew to over 20 once Molly Sanders buried a pair of shots from deep to begin the fourth. Those pair of Sanders' makes was the start of a 15-4 run that gave the Midshipmen a 30-point lead, 64-34, and sealed the victory for Navy.
Lafayette will be back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to host American in a Patriot League tilt slated for 7 p.m. at Kirby.
