BOSTON - The Lafayette women's basketball team dropped a Patriot League road game to Boston U. 68-50 on Sunday afternoon at Case Gymnasium.
Sammy Stipa paced the Leopards (1-15, 0-4 PL) with a season-high 15 points, two shy of her career best. Olivia Gumbs reached double-figure scoring for the second straight game with 12, while Alexis Santarelli added eight to go along with a team-high six boards.
The Terriers (5-10, 3-1 PL) did most of their damage from inside as they scored 34 of their 68 points from down low. Corrine Williams was the leading scorer for Boston U. with a career-high 21 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field, while bringing in nine boards, five on the offensive end.
The Terriers scored on an uncontested layup to start the game right off the tip, but the Leopards answered with a 7-2 run to take the lead. Boston U. got right back into the game though and led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, shooting over 50 percent from the field.
Once the Terriers' got that lead, they never looked back and controlled the tempo the rest of the way.
Boston U. utilized a 10-2 run to go ahead 21-13 midway through the second quarter. The run was capped off once Anna Ptasinski buried a shot from beyond the arc, but the Terriers came right back with five unanswered points.
A pair of 3-pointers late in the first half gave the Terriers a 12-point lead, 32-20, heading into the break.
The lead grew to 16, 39-25, in favor of the Terriers after a Nia Irving layup midway through the third quarter to cap off a 7-2 Boston U. run. The Leopards would counter with an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to eight. During that stretch, Lafayette went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
The Terriers' advantage would get to as low as seven once Stipa beat the buzzer with a shot from deep for the Maroon and White.
A 12-2 Boston U. run to open up the fourth quarter put the Terriers on top 60-43 and Boston U. held onto the lead en route to the conference win.
The Leopards will return to College Hill for just their fifth home game of the year as they host Holy Cross on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
