EASTON, Pa. -- The Lafayette volleyball team saw its two game win streak come to an end Friday evening inside of Kirby Sports Center, falling in Patriot League play to Colgate, 3-1.
"There were a lot of positives to take out of tonight's game," said senior captain Tori Smith. "Our hitters were calling for the ball, everyone was playing scrappy defense and even though we didn't get the result we wanted, we can build on what we did tonight moving forward, and I can't wait to play Colgate at their place."
The opening set of the evening was tightly contested, as neither side gave up much ground. Colgate utilized a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to open an 18-14 lead and force the Leopards into a timeout. Lafayette tied it at 18-18 after two straight Sonia Musso aces, but the Raiders regained control and hold on for a 25-21 win.
Colgate jumped out to an early lead in the second set, opening up a 10-5 lead. The Leopards battled back into the set, bringing the score to 17-21 after taking advantage of a bad set by the Raiders' Lauren Sanderson. Julia Howard recorded two straight service aces before the Raiders sided-out, but Lafayette held on and ended the set on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a kill from Carly Kutschke to wrap it up at 25-22.
The third set saw the Raiders race out to another early lead, eventually forcing a Lafayette timeout after an error from Adriana Heimbauer error that brought the score to 14-5. Colgate continued to increase its advantage as the set wore on, winning by a final score of 25-10.
Colgate repeated their performance from the third set in the fourth, opening an early lead. The Raiders forced Lafayette into a timeout after a service ace brought their lead to 10-3. A kill from Smith cut the Raiders' advantage to 19-10, but Colgate regained the momentum and took the set 25-14.
Smith finished with double-digit kills for the second straight match, pacing the Leopards with 10. Howard recorded a team-high 24 assists, while Lexie Caraveo chipped in a game-high 21 digs.
The loss brings Lafayette to 5-16 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Colgate improves to 11-8 on the season and 2-5 in Patriot League action.
Lafayette hits the road for a Patriot League tilt against Army next Friday, Oct. 20. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
