Oct. 20, 2017

Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lafayette women's volleyball team took Army to four sets, but the team effort was not enough, as the Black Knights took the match 3-1.

The opening set of evening set the tone for the rest of the match, as the teams battled back and forth throughout. The Leopards jumped out to and an early 12-6 lead, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Sonia Musso and Katrina Ruggiero. After an Army timeout, the Maroon and White were able to maintain control, utilizing a 4-0 run to open a 19-12 lead.

Army came storming back, going on a momentum shifting 9-0 run to bring the score to 21-19. Christian Luhnow answered for the Leopards to bring the score to 21-20, but that was as close as the Maroon and White were able to get, as the Black knights took the opening set 25-20.

The Black Knights came out of the gates fast in the second set, opening up a 14-4 lead after an 8-0 run forced the Leopards to call a timeout. A kill from Tori Smith brought the score to 19-13, but Army held on from there to win the set 25-16.

The third set proved to be a wild one, as the teams traded points for the majority of the set. After Army opened a 21-15, the Leopards took advantage of two attacking errors by the Black Knights to get back into it, as a kill from Ruggiero forced Army into a timeout with the score sitting at 21-19.

Lafayette grew back into the set from there, knotting the score at 24-24, and at 25-25 after a kill form Smith. After Army scored to take a 26-25 lead, the Leopards ended the match on a 3-0 run as an ace from Musso gave the Leopards a 28-26 win.

Army seized the momentum from the very beginning of the fourth and final set of the night, using a 4-0 run to build a 15-7 lead. A kill from Adriana Heimbauer cut the lead to 21-13, but the deficit was too much for the Leopards to overcome.

Musso led the Leopards' attack, finishing the night with 10 kills and a match-high three service aces. Christian Luhnow recorded nine kills for the Maroon and White while Smith and Heimbauer each chipped in seven. Julia Howard contributed a team-high 30 assists while Smith led the way with 16 digs.

Tonight's contest marked the first time since an October 11, 2014 match that the Leopards took a set off the Black Knights. That match was a five set thriller that Army was able to win, 3-2.

The Maroon and White are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Holy Cross for a 6 p.m. contest.
