WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lafayette volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-13) to American on Saturday afternoon in D.C.

The loss brings the Leopards to 3-15 overall on the year and 1-4 in the Patriot League. The Eagles improve to 5-1 in league play and 13-7 overall.

The Eagles came rushing out to start the opening set, jumping out to a 10 point lead after going on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 13-3. Lafayette attempted to work its way back into the set, as Christian Luhnow led the way with four kills, but the early deficit was too much, as American took the set 25-15.

Lafayette battled in a back-and-forth affair in the second set, as neither team could establish momentum throughout the set. The Eagles eventually forced the Leopards into a timeout after taking a 20-17 lead, but Lafayette responded with two straight points highlighted by a kill from Alexis Capers. American took back control of the set from there, holding on to win 25-20.

The third and final set of the afternoon was close in the early goings, but things opened up after the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to bring their lead to bring the score to 15-7. After the run was halted by a kill from Sonia Musso, the Leopards gained some traction but the damage was already done. American held onto its lead and ended the set on a 6-0 run to take it, 25-13 and win the match, 3-0.

Luhnow led the Leopards with seven kills, while Tori Smith and Musso chipped in with six kills apiece. Julia Howard posted 13 assists while Lexie Caraveo recorded a team-high 11 digs.

The Maroon and White take a break from league play tomorrow when they take on Coppin State at 4 p.m.
