EASTON, Pa. ÃÆ'Æ’¢ÃÆ'¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡¬ÃÆ'¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…â€Å" The Lafayette volleyball team fell to Navy in straight sets (25-14, 25-11, 25-16) Saturday evening in its final home contest of the 2017 season.
The loss moves the Leopards to 5-22 overall on the year with a 2-12 mark in Patriot League play. With the win, Navy improves to 21-6 and 12-4 within the league. Prior to the match, the Leopards honored their two members of the class of 2018, Tori Smith and Katie Kidder.
Navy came out hard and fast in the opening set, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. A kill from Alexis Capers pulled the Leopards within five as the score sat at 12-7. The Maroon and White couldn't overcome the early deficit as the Midshipmen ran away with the set, 25-14.
The second set saw the two team's battle back-and-forth in the early goings, as a kill form Christian Luhnow leveled the score at 5-5. Navy seized the momentum following the kill, going on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 10-5 and force Lafayette into a timeout. The Midshipmen kept their foot on the gas form their using a 7-0 run to open a 17-7 lead. The Leopards couldn't find their way back into the set as Navy won 25-11.
The Leopards played Navy tight in the early portion of the third set, as a kill from Adriana Heimbauer tied the score at 8-8, marking the seventh time the score was knotted up early on. A 5-0 run by Navy brought the score to 14-11, forcing Lafayette to call a timeout. Two straight kills from Sonia Musso and Luhnow brought the score to 14-16, but the Leopards couldn't complete the comeback, as Navy took the final set 25-16.
Luhnow paced the Leopards with seven kills, while Smith and Musso finished with four a piece. Julia Howard recorded a team high 19 assists. Smith chipped in defensively as well with six digs.
