EASTON, Pa. - An efficient shooting fourth quarter put Boston U. past the Lafayette women's basketball team 75-58 on Saturday afternoon in a Patriot League game in Kirby Sports Center.
It was a six-point game heading into the fourth quarter, but the Terriers (8-14, 6-5 PL) closed things out on a high note, shooting 8-of-11 from the field. With the Terriers practically unable to miss, they used a 25-6 run that put the game out of reach.
Lafayette (1-22, 0-11 PL) was led by Olivia Gumbs' career-day as she tallied a career-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The freshman also corralled 11 rebounds for her third double-double on the year. Anna Ptasinski was the other Leopard to reach double-figures in scoring as she finished the afternoon with 16.
What gave the Terriers the edge was their ability to knock down shots late and consistently connect on their 3-point attempts throughout the course of the game. As a team, they shot 56 percent from long range. On the other end, the Leopards struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on 24 percent of their attempts.
The Terriers rushed right out of the gates and after hitting four of their first five shots to open the game, they led 14-0. Just under the six-minute mark of the first quarter, the Leopards got on the board with a 3-pointer by Ptasinski. The Terriers would add another basket on a layup by Sophie Beaudry, but the Leopards would respond with four unanswered points to cut the deficit to 9, 16-7.
In the first few minutes of the second quarter, the Boston U. lead was down to three, 21-18, after a 7-1 Lafayette run that was capped off by a Maia Hood layup. At the midway point of the second quarter, the Leopards would go on another run and following a Ptasinski three, the Terriers' lead was down to one, 30-29. However, Boston U. closed out the half with a pair of makes from long range and went into the break up 37-32.
In the third, the Leopards successfully crashed the offensive glass, picking up five offensive boards and scoring six second-chance points. Gumbs went to work, scoring seven of her 19 points and bringing down four rebounds. With three minutes to go, the freshman cut to the basket and put it in off the glass to knot the game up at 44-44.
Boston U. was quick to counter and put in six straight points to close out the third that began the lengthy 25-6 run that spanned seven minutes. With that run, the Terriers grabbed their largest lead of the afternoon and went ahead 69-50 before closing out the game for the conference win.
The Leopards will head to Worcester, Mass. for their next game as they take on Holy Cross in a Patriot League contest on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
