CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston scored seven runs over the first three innings to pull away to a 9-1 win over Lafayette in six innings on Saturday in the Charleston Challenge.

The Cougars (12-10) scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a Jordin Jones' sac fly. The hosts added two more in the second as Dana Horgan (3-for-3) hit a two-run home run. They broke open the game with four runs in the third inning off Marinelli. Jones, Taylor Belfiore and Horgan (2 RBI) all homered to give Charleston a 7-0 lead.
Lafayette (1-4) got on the scoreboard in the fifth. Samantha Sweigart and Stephanie Thomas singled to start the inning and Sweigart later scored on an error.
The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the sixth off Thomas to put the final at 9-1. Marinelli (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits while Thomas gave up two earned runs on five hits. Sydney Shipley (4-2) earned the circle win, allowing one run on three hits.
