LEWISBURG Pa. -- Bucknell hurler Reanne Geffert held Lafayette to three hits in the Patriot League opener for both teams, helping the hosts secure a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Becker Field.
The teams traded runs in the second inning. The Leopards manufactured their score. Brooke Wensel was the lead-off hitter and reach when she was hit by a pitch. Kristyn Marinelli sacrificed her to second and Wensel came 60 feet closer on a wild pitch. Jenna Orlando plated Wensel with an RBI squeeze bunt for the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Bucknell (16-5, 1-0) evened the score with a two-out RBI-double from Anna Gimmestad (2-for-3).
The Leopards put runners on in the third and fourth inning, but were retired in order by Geffert in the fifth. Bucknell took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Lauren Hadley singled, stole second and scored on clean-up hitter Meghan Kovac's single back through the box. The Bison threatened for more in the inning, but Marinelli stranded two Bison runners.
Lafayette (1-8, 0-1) put the lead-off batter on in the sixth on Sweigart's single up the middle. She finished with two of Lafayette's three hits in the game. Stephanie Thomas, Miranda Skurla and Wensel all popped up to end the inning. Lafayette could not get any baserunners aboard in the seventh as Bucknell held on for the 2-1 final.
Geffert (9-2) struck out five, allowing one run on three hits without a walk in the win. Marinelli (0-3) had one of her best outings of the young season, allowing two runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeouts.
