LEWISBURG Pa. -- The Bucknell Bison completed the series sweep over Lafayette softball with an 8-1 win on Sunday at Becker Field.
Bucknell (18-5, 3-0) scored at least one run in every inning but the fourth, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and holding a lead for the remainder. Bucknell's No. 3 hitter Lauren Hadley doubled in a pair of runs in the team's first at-bat.
Lafayette answered with its only run of the game in the top of the second. Kristyn Marinelli doubled to right center to lead off the inning and Maddie Wensel plated her with a double in the other gap as Lafayette cut the deficit to 2-1.
Leading 4-1, Bucknell put away the game with a three-run sixth inning. Meghan Kovac and Paulina Gutkin each had infield singles to score runs and another scored when Stephanie Thomas hit a batter with the bases loaded.
For the third time in three games, the Lafayette offense was held to three hits. Samantha Sweigart singled to start the game and Marinelli and Wensel followed with doubles in the second inning, but Lafayette did not have a baserunner the rest of the way.
Bucknell starter Raeanne Geffert (10-2) struck out seven in her second victory of the series. Marinelli (0-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 2.1 innings. Thomas threw 2.2 innings and also gave up four runs on five hits. Stacy Gordon pitched the final inning and did not give up a run while scattering two hits.
Lafayette (1-10, 0-3) is slated to play its first home game on Tuesday, hosting St. Peter's at 3 p.m.
