BALTIMORE, Md. -- UMBC handed Lafayette a 5-0 loss in the Leopards' Tournament finale on Sunday in the UMBC First Pitch Classic.
The hosts scored a run in the first on a solo home run by Kaelin Jackson, but the big inning came in the second, when the Retrievers scored four runs off Lafayette starter Alexis Randall. Carly Lane (2-for-3) and Tori Alexander combined to drive in three runs and UMBC (5-13) added another on a passed ball to lead 5-0.
That deficit proved too steep for the Leopards who managed four hits (three off starter Kim Puccio and one off Kelly Lane) over seven innings. Miranda Skurla had the lone extra-base with a double as Lafayette left six runners on base.
Puccio (2-4) collected the win, striking out two over four innings. Randall (0-1) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on eight hits over two innings. Kristyn Marinelli, who was coming off a save in the first game of the day, threw four scoreless innings of relief and surrendered just two hits.
Lafayette (1-3) will not play against until March 15 at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader at Penn.
