ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The No. 10 Lafayette women's basketball team represented the first tenth-seed to ever play in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals and ultimately came up short, falling to No. 2 Navy, 53-37, on Monday night in Alumni Hall.

It was a difficult shooting night for both sides, but 19 Lafayette turnovers led to 17 Navy points and also allowed the Midshipmen to take 11 more shots. Despite Navy putting up its second lowest scoring total of the season, the Midshipmen finished strong and scored on several timely possessions.

Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby was the lone Leopard in double-figures with 12 points to go along with seven boards. Ashley Lutz added six points while reeling in a career-high 19 boards, which is tied for the fifth-most rebounds in a single game by a Lafayette women's basketball player. Olivia Gumbs was held to four points in the contest, but brought down 10 boards.

It took some time for the Leopards and Midshipmen to figure each other out as the two teams combined for just three points in the first four minutes of action. Lafayette and Navy both shot under 20 percent from the floor in the opening quarter, but the Midshipmen held the slight advantage, 9-7, heading into the second.

All-Patriot League First Team player, Sarita Condie opened up the quarter with a three and following a jumper by Kaila Clark, Condie drove the lane and laid it in to put the Midshipmen on top 16-10. Lafayette called a timeout and each team went on to score just four more points in the half and the Midshipmen led 20-14 going into the break.

Navy, the league-leader in 3-point shooting percentage, had several open looks from deep, but struggled to find the bottom of the basket and made just two of its 14 attempts in the first half and three of its 21 for the game. The Leopards played with a different strategy, trying to utilize their height and size down low, but also failed to convert on several opportunities close to the hoop.

Lafayette cut it to one, 23-22, by starting the new half on a 9-3 run. Following a Navy score, the Leopards knotted the game up at 25-25 once Anna Ptasinski buried a shot from long range before Maia Hood sank a three of her own to put the Maroon and White on top 28-25. Navy would get one more basket in the quarter and it was a one-point game heading into the fourth.

The Leopards led by two, 33-31, until the Midshipmen put up eight unanswered points to move ahead 39-33 with over five minutes remaining in the game. Navy's lead grew as large as 10, 43-33, late in the fourth and the Midshipmen closed things out at the free throw line en route to the Patriot League Tournament victory.
