HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Lafayette notched its first Patriot League series victory of the season, closing out Colgate with a 2-1 win on Saturday in the second game of the conference doubleheader. Junior Stephanie Thomas performed in the circle and the batter's box, garnering the win while going 2-for-3 with a double in game one.
The Leopards got things going in the top of the first. With two outs, Maddie Wensel doubled to extend the inning. Kristyn Marinelli singled home Wensel for t he early 1-0 lead.
Colgate tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Katie Bushee doubled and later scored on an error.
Lafayette took the lead for good in the top of the next inning. Thomas doubled, advanced to third on a Brooke Wensel single and scored on an error on the same play. Lafayette led 2-1.
The Raiders put runners on base in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but Thomas and the Leopard defense maintained the one-run margin in the 2-1 final.
Thomas evened her record at 4-4, allowing one run on six hits while striking out two. Kyle Griswold (3-8) struck out four and gave up one earned run on six hits over seven innings in the loss.
In Saturday's first game, Colgate scored six runs over the first two innings and pulled away for an 11-5 final.
Nicole Rounsavill started things for the Raiders in the first, hitting a two-run home run before Jordan Miller doubled in another run to lead 3-0. The hosts tacked on three more in the second inning, one scoring on an error and a stolen base and the final on Holly Geranen's single through the left side to lead 6-0.
Lafayette got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Thomas (2-for-3) plated Mallory Kane (2-for-4) with a single. Colgate kept the margin at six runs, scoring its own run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 7-1.
In the fifth, Jenna Orlando's second career home run cut the deficit to 7-2. Three more runs came plateward for Lafayette in the sixth, two scoring on a Thomas single and one more on an error as Lafayette cut the lead to 7-5.
Colgate (9-22, 1-8) quelled any Leopard thoughts of a comeback with four runs in the home half of the sixth in the 11-5 final.
Marinelli (0-6) took the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over 1.1 innings. Gillian Murray (1-4) was the winner, striking out three while giving up three earned runs on eight hits.
Lafayette (6-19, 3-9) travels to Manhattan on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
