EASTON, Pa. -- It took 11 innings to determine the winner of the opening game of a three-game series between Lafayette and Boston University. Rachel Levine singled home Kaitlin Sahlinger for the 1-0 final in favor of the visitors.
Facing the Terriers' Kali Magane, the Leopards could not get their bats moving until the seventh inning when freshman Mallory Kane broke through with Lafayette's first hit which led off the inning. Maddie Wensel's sac bunt placed Kane in scoring position with one out. Two walks sandwiched a lineout and the Leopards had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning. Brooke Wensel fouled out to end the threat.
Meanwhile, Lafayette starter Stephanie Thomas continued to pitch well and was backed by solid defense in game one. Thomas gave up two hits in the 10th and BU had runners on second and third with two outs before Thomas enticed a groundout to quell the rally.
In the 11th inning, Sahlinger's one-out single got things going. A groundout and a wild pitch brought Sahlinger just 60 feet from home plate before Levin delivered the game-winning blow.
In the home half of the 11th, Kane had her second hit of the game, but Magane struck out the next two batters to end it with a 1-0 final.
Magane (9-10) fanned four and walked five, allowing just Kane's two hits over 11 innings. Thomas (4-5) surrendered just the one run, while scattering 14 hits.
Game two saw Boston break out for three runs over the first three innings en route to a 7-0 final.
The Terriers scored the only run they would need in the first on a throwing error. They added two more on a Sahlinger double and a wild pitch to lead 3-0 after two.
Trailing 4-0, Lafayette had its best scoring chance in the home half of the fifth inning. Thomas reached on a lead-off single and Brooke Wensel also singled to put a pair of runners on with one out. Makinna Akers then struck out Jenna Orlando and enticed Alexis Randall into a groundout at first to strand a pair of runners.
Boston U. (16-24, 8-3) padded its lead with three runs in the seventh, two coming by way of Emma Wong's bases-clearing triple in the 7-0 final.
Akers struck out seven and allowed only four hits in the circle victory. Senior Kristyn Marinelli (0-7) took the loss, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits
The Leopards (6-23, 3-11) will honor their four seniors prior to Sunday's game as part of Senior Day. First pitch is slated for noon.
