EASTON, Pa. -- The Lafayette softball team couldn't salvage a win in the three-game series with Boston U. this weekend, dropping the Sunday finale by a 6-0 score.
Makinna Akers was excellent on the mound for the Terriers, throwing a complete game, three-hitter, giving up just one walk to go with five strikeouts. Jilee Schanda was the offensive horse for the Terriers, going 4-for-4 on the afternoon, eventually scoring on three of those occasions.
On the mound for the Leopards, Lindsey Cherry saw her first action of the season, pitching a scoreless frame in the top of the first before giving way to Stephanie Thomas. Thomas went five innings, giving up four hits and three runs, while Kristyn Marinelli threw the final inning with three earned on three hits and a walk in the frame.
Samantha Sweigart, Maddie Wensel and Jenna Orlando all came through with hits for the Maroon and White, while Sweigart also worked a walk in three plate appearances. Gabi Martinez and Alex Heinen each recorded a pair of RBI for the visitors.
After a scoreless inning from Cherry and two clean from Thomas, the Terriers opened the scoring in the fourth. Schanda doubled to left center and Gabi Martinez brought her around with a shot down the left-field line to give Boston U. a 1-0 advantage.
Thomas continued to pitch well over the next inning-plus, but the Terriers were able to scratch across two more in the sixth. Following another Schanda double to left center, a Heinen groundout to the right side brought her home from third, while an infield single later in the inning moved the edge to 3-0 into the bottom of the sixth.
The Terriers were able to bring across three more insurance tallies in the top of the seventh to make it a comfortable 6-0 lead into the final half inning. Wensel tried to stretch a single into a double to open the bottom of the seventh, but she was gunned down at second, thwarting the chance at a big inning. Akers came through with a strikeout and a groundout to finish it off.
The Leopards return to action at home on Thursday, hosting Drexel for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
